Am I correct in thinking that the -R and +R formats are totally different and you need a compatible drive to read/write.

Which is better?

My son has just got a laptop with CD-R drive whereas our home PC uses CD+R. Am I correct in thinking any CD's he burns on his laptop won't work on our home PC and vice versa? Apart from changing one of the drives, is there any way round this?

You may be getting mixed up with DVD-R and DVD+R.

You might also be thinking of CD-RW which is a rewritable CD disk and is also often used to indicate a CD rewriter i.e. CD-RW drive.
