CD not detected

My machine will no longer detect when there is a CD in the drive. (I don't mean that it doesn't auto start). When I put a CD in the drive, either nothing happens, or it starts to spin, the cursor changes to arrow-with-CD, then the spinning stops and the cursor goes back to normal. Even if I right-click on the drive's icon in My Computer, selecting Open or Explore fails to give anything.

Over the weekend I put in a new drive - no change. I even replaced the ribbon cable - no chang.

This happens with music CDs or data and program CDs.

Any suggestions on fixing this?

Go th Device Manager - find the drivers for the drive in question and delete! Check again after a reboot.
