CD no longer accesible

a frind recently turned on his computer only to find that his cd drive was no longer available and the secondary IDE driver had an exclaimation device against it. He resolved it by reloading windows!! but I'm sure I've seen this problem listed here with a much neater solution but cannot remember that solution. Anybody any ideas?

Remove exclamation device first [delete] then restart PC. Should see add new hardware. Follow instructions using CD driver disc. Or using CD driver disc just install again.

I don't think windows actually needs a driver supplied with a CD, I think it can 'see' the CD drive with it's own driver. As I say, I think i saw a similar fault reported and the solution was pretty straight forward, just can't remember what it was.
