WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

A friend of mine had the same problem. He had a disc stuck in one of the drives. Hopefully, there will be a tiny hole on the front of the drive into which you can push a straightened out paper clip to make the caddy eject.

The simple steps should be taken first. Check that the drives' leads and connections are firmly and correctly attached.

Then reboot and, hopefully, Windows will Find New Hardware and reinstall the basic CDROM drivers (all that is required).

The intended use of rewriters is achieved through burning software such as Nero.

If the drives are listed in Device Manager via Safe Mode then the most likely cause is that of loose or incorrectly fitted leads and connections.
