CD Drive Won't recognise disks

A friend has a problem with his internal CD drive not recognising any of his discs. I have had a look at the settings in device manager and in Disk Management under Computer Management and things look normal.
Any idea what is going on here?

Are the lights of the CD drive coming on/flashing when he puts a disc in?

Did he try rebooting to see if the problem persists?

Did he open the case & reseat the IDE & power cables?

1. Autoplay Repair Wizard

2. No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41
Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager.

Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer. If in doubt make a restore point before making changes. click here

3. Check cables fully inserted at drive and motherboard

4. laser US, buy a new DVD RW approx £30

There is some light activity. Rebooting no good. Have not checked ide cables yet but will do shortly.
