CD drive problems

My computer has a CD drive and a DVD/CD drive. My CD drive recognises and plays audio CDs but will not recognise programs on CD and will not play them. I have to use my DVD/CD drive which works fine. Why is this and how can I fix it. It has been going on now for some time, possibly started after XP2 fix? or my son messing with the computer!

Cheers

How old and what is the speed of the drive? Maybe the drive lens needs cleaning.

The drive is about 2 years old and 52 x 24 x 52, used to work fine. Now only plays audio and will not run programs.

I don't see why it should do this as it is high speed and not old, the lens wouldn't even get dirty that quickly. Maybe it is refusing to work as it recognises a new drive, but that is a big if. It may need re-installation as it is confused by being switched to XP2. Some drives have had this problem.
