If you used it recently, have you installed or updated anything since then?

You could try a System restore to before it stopped responding.

You could try reinstalling it and/or check for new drivers.

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41 Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager. (This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.) Download and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect. This utility is only intended for Windows® XP, but also appears to work for Vista and Windows 7. You may need Administrator level access to use this utility. If you do not have Administrator level access, the program will say it is finished, but will not have made any changes.

Similar fixes works for W7 Vista or XP

or manual fix Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer. If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.

Thanks for advice but no good. No filters in registry, tried the cd/dvd fix, rebooted, no change. CD still not showing up, unknown when cd stopped working. microsoft mr fix it, could not find it to fix. No restore point available before easrly november. Anymore ideas. My system is an EIsystem laptop, windows XP sp3. about 8 years old. Using it due to smart failure on my vista laptop.

Any more help is appreciated.

Thank You

  1. have you tried uninstall and reinstall in device manager

  2. check power and data cables are fullu inserted at motherboard and drive

3 try swapping power and data cables.

No disks required as all drivers are built into windows Virtually all CDs /DVDs players and writers will use the same windows drivers. they are in the windows\system32\drivers\ or windows\system32\DRIVERS \ folder and are:- DRIVERS\cdrom.sys

and in the windows\system32 folder

try device manager update driver and install these files. to get your CD/DVD working again.

sorry but i do not know what to look for, checked drivers but no good, can not open them to try and re-install. This is a laptop computer, can not just open it up, to check cables.

Remove and refit drive to remake connections.

(sometimes a screw on the underside secures the drive i position (depends on make / model)) In device manager right click the drive select uninstall from the menu

Action - Scan for new hardware, will make windows find and reinstall it.

Fruitbat. Thanks for your advice but it is no good. I have had a look at the drive, had to remove six screws to check if cable broken, this included cover over the drive. Could not find a problem, putting everything back together was a pain, and may have damaged the drive. What I have noticed is no mention of CD drive in device manager, No CDrom shown in bios. Only way to fix would be a total re-install of operating system, this can only be acheived by download, but has Windows XP is no longer available this could be a problem. Once I get enough funds I will have to have my vista machines hard drive replaced, then have my XP system repaired.

Thank You for your help it was appreciated.
