CD drive has disappeared

i've been having some problems with my cd drives.
The event viewer shows system errors for source cdrom as "driver detected a controller error on \device\cdrom1" and source atapi error as "\device\Ide\Ideport1 is not ready for access yet."
Now the drive has disappeared from the system and is not listed in device manager.
If I try to shut down this hangs the system.
As far as i know the cables are all connected ok and jumpers set to master for my cd writer and slave for my cd rom drive. This seems to happen when I use the drives.

Has anyone any ideas on how how to get it back without shutting down and more importantly what is causing this and how to sort it.

I'm on win xp.
Cheers.

I would suggest uninstalling the drives in Device Manager. Re-boot, and Windows will re-install them.

uninstall the ide the drive sits on and reboot as this seems to be where the problem stems from.
