I've recently changed my OS to win 2000 professional from win 98se and now my cdrom drive and cd/rw drive do not appear in in the my computer folder. In device manager its says 'This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)'. Ive tried reinstalling the drives but this doesn't work. Help! not an expert on computers.

Code 31 (new in Windows 98)
This device is not working properly because <device> is not working properly. (Code 31)

To view the properties for <device> and see why it is not working, click Properties."

where <device> is the dependent device that must be fixed in order for this device to work properly.

Solution button: Properties

This code appears when a device is dependent on another device to be functioning correctly. This does not include devices that are enumerated by the parent device.

The Properties button displays the properties for the other device. More than likely, the other device will also have one of these Device Manager error codes. Follow all the recommended solutions. If the devices still do not work, remove them from Device Manager and use the Add New Hardware wizard to redetect them. Finally, consult with the hardware manufacturer for updated drivers.

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41
Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager. This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio software. Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer. If in doubt make a restore point before making changes. click here
