cd corrupt or what?

I have a CD-R it is little used and has my digital photos in it, it is only half full. Suddenly it has failed and appears blank or rather WIN Xp/My Computer reports the disc as having ZERO bytes free and ZERO bytes free.
Any advise please?

Is it a cd writeable or a cd re-writeable?

its cd write only

Not being a user of XP I cant say for certain but it seems that you have been adding files to the cd over a period so the cd has remained open so that more files can be written to it. It is possible that the last time you used the cd-r it didn't write to the cd correctly and you now have a corrupt unreadable disc.
