CD burning

Can anyone recommend a good(free) easy to use cd burning programme?
My Nero programme is nearly 4 years old, and I feel there must be a programme that is more up to date with the various cd types and file types that are available now.
For instance, what is the best recording format, mp3, wma or wav - or is there something even better?

PS: I've got version 5.5.10.7 which came with Mesh.
Any idea what the latest version available to me is?

Version 5 is very old now and does not support DVD.

Version 7 is the latest version but I found it gave me a lot of problems. I uninstalled and went back to Version 6 which is very stable.

You can buy a version 6 CD from Amazon for 1p plus £3.23 postage. Once you have it you should be able to update it for free from the Nero site.
