Cardbus NIC boot failure

I've hope someone can help me as I'm getting rather distressed now!

I have a dall Latitude D400 recon laptop.Out of warranty, no start up or recovery discs.

My laptop made a whirring noise, which I thought was fan getting jammed, then wouldn't boot up when I started it up yesterday. First error message said no bootable devices found--strike f1 to retry boot, F2 for set up utility. On F1 I then get CARDBUS NIC boot failed.

On start up I can get no further than the DEll logo screen. F12 doesn't work and you don't get far enough for F8 option.
Any help will be greatly received.

I am using a friends laptop so may not be abel to respond straight wawy.

It can't find the hard drive

remove and refit the drive hopefully this will remake a bad connection, if not then it looks as if the drive has failed or is corrupt.
