hi mike ...
you will need to format a dvd-rw before you can use it ....Dave

What burning software do you use? XP only burns CD's.

Should have been more specific, I am using HP backup softweare which says I need 3 DVD or 17 CD. when I put a DVD-RW in it says its CD and I will need 17. I want to use 3 DVD.

As said, you need a third party piece of software to burn dvd's.

Deepburner click here will do the job.

Try using different media such as -R dvd

What will the format do, will it remove the RW properties. I was hoping to use RW to use as Regular Backups.

Need to nip out to Asda(24) and get some -R dvd.
Deepburner looks good.

hi mike ...
formatting makes the disk useable you can write stuff to it .....when you need to use it again a format will blank it ready to use again...Dave

Now got DVD-R and Machine still thinks its a CD.
So as rdave13 points out XP has no DVD writer program only CD.

which should I choose Deepburner or any other sugestions welcolm

If you are going to be doing much DVD stuff, I would advise you to get Nero - it is worth paying for, though you might be able to get a free download - not sure about that though.
