Can't remove a google image from desktop

A girlfriend downloaded an image of Richard Hammond (it's a girly thing) from google images to her desk top. She has tried to remove but to no avail.
Going to control panel "disply" has no effect, it will not remove or allow another image in its place.
There appears to be no file for "Richard Hammond" that she can remove either.
The original desktop image is there for an instant when she boots up or closes down then "Richard" takes over.
Any ideas for his removal please?

You should just go to the display settings & choose the Desktop tab. From there you should be able to change the desktops background. If the picture was set directly from the web, it would appear as 'Desktop Background'. Just change it to any of the Windows default pictures or browse to choose your own.

Just a note, to get to displlay settings right click on desktop, and select properties

Hi Kestrel. tried what you suggested. No good, sorry. Her original picture background is showing, no trace of "hammond" in any of the alternative backgrounds either. It lets her pick another, press apply but when she goes back to the desktop, there is "hammond" still. His pic is nowhere to be found but there he sits.

Try this to start with. I have found a basic background image using Google image search.
Once you have opened it, right click on the image and click on Set as background

You may be able to find out where he is hiding, if you don't mind looking at the registry.
Have a look at the following artical:
Go to the registry keys that it says & have a look at the location of the file. You should be able to delete it then.
