Cant open windows explorer on start up

On XP on booting up computer i only get my wallpaper, no task bar desktop icons etc. I can go into task manager and find windows explorer and it then comes up on screen. Bit of a pain having to go into task manager every start up. Can anyone suggest a solution.

Since when? Tried system restore? Follow the steps you use to start explorer but type

Run a full antivirus and antispyware scan (after updating them of course) if that gets you back on track.
