Can't open downloaded power point files or Microsoft templates

I am using Windows 7 and for some reason my computer stopped opening up .ppt files that are E-mailed to me or off of websites. If I save them to a jump drive from another computer, they will open. I don't readily see anything in my security settings that would prevent it but I'm not too savvy in this area. I am also unable to download templates from Microsoft Office. It says to make sure I am connected to the internet (which I am) and try again. Not sure if these two issues are related.
