Cant load XP on to a clean drive

I have 4 hard drives. I can load XP by doing it from my existing XP drive C to any chosen partion, no problem. However, when I disconnect drive C and try to load to a clean drive D, it loads a few files and I get a blue screen saying STOP UNKNOWN HARD ERROR. I have tried this many times in the past, all with same result, where am I going wrong ? ( I did change the slave to master!)
Hope somebody can help

Does it give a file name after the error message?

This will bump you to the top of the board anyway.

When you tried to install XP to a clean drive (set as master, with original drive disconnected), were you booting from the CDROM?

no, no file names.
