can't install anything

Is anyone able to help me please?
For the past 6 weeks, I have been unable to install any programs on my pc. If I try to install an update from the Microsoft update site it will download the patch but will not install it. It just does not progress. The same applies to trying to run a driver disc for a new printer I have bought. It's the same when I try to install uk info disc.
Running Windows XP home edition.
Has anyone got any ideas please?

Do you have the XP Disk ?

If so then use the system file checker

Put your windows CD into the CD ROM and hold the shift key (the one with arrow pointing up, just above the Ctrl key on the left of your keyboard). Holding shift for a few seconds will stop the Windows CD from auto running, but the drive will still spin up to read the disk then spin back down again. Once it has spun down you can release the shift key.

Now click Start/All Programs/Accessories and choose Command Prompt. Type in

sfc /scannow

and hit enter. This will check and replace any damaged system files.

what are you logged on as, if you are not on as Admin, hold down the "shift" key then right click and select "run as" from the menu, then enter your admin password, which should run the .exe
