Can't increase low volume on dvd film playback

I have a Latitude C510 (Model PPO1L) running Win XP professional and with an 8x DVD-ROM disk drive module. Usually play DVDs i.e.films using a program called InterVideo WinDVD4 but lately it just won't play any DVD at all. So I've started using MediaPlayer, and although the DVDs will play, the sound is only just audible, even though the volume control is at max. Thought this may be a soundcard issue, but the sound is fine with other media and with games e.g. Sims. Sometimes it takes a bit of opening and closing for the DVD to be recognised by the system. I've tried using an optical media cleaning CD but this hasn't helped.

Has anyone any ideas re: the route of the problem and if/how it could be fixed?

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

...have you cleaned the lens? Does this happen if you try any other player?

It seems to be a sound codec issue.
A better app for dvd playback, which has codecs built in.
