Can't get my PC to boot up

  pt713 01:35 06 Nov 08

I have a Dell XPS 600 with windows xp. All has been well except today I loaded an update to my zone alarm firewall. Normally no problems with zone alarm. Went to reboot the PC to complete the install and now it freezes on the initial screen as the progress bar is trying to load. Have tried hitting the F8 key while starting, to no avail. The hard drive light works for about a minute, then stops. I'm unable to get to the screen to boot from the CD drive (which seem to light and spin on start up), so I may troubleshoot with a diagnostic CD. Can anyone help me with this?
Thank You

If you can't access safe mode (Tap the F8 key as the machine boots)

You may have to try a reapir of XP.

Your dell may have come with a recovery partiton, but using this will cause loss of data and applications.

Go into your BIOS screen (Usually by tapping the DEL key on boot up.

Change the boot order to boot from DVD / CD first.

Follow these instructions EXACTLY:
