Can't get Audacity to record throughput

I'm trying to get Audacity 1.2.6 to pick up the stereo mix throughput without success. I'm pretty sure that I've managed to do this in the past but it won't play ball now.

I think that it needs the source to be selected from the dropdown to the right of the Mic level slider, but it's greyed out.

In Preferences/Audio IO, I get three options in the recording dropdown there - MS sound mapper, Realtek HD Audio and Realtek HD Digital - but they make no difference. The documentation is poor.

I'm using an old GA-8I945P Pro board with a built-in Realtek HD chip.

Thanks for the info. It may not solve the issue, but at least explains it.
