i have read that xp has a built in zip facility...have tried creating a new folder on the desktop but there is no zip facility offered...can anyone help?

When you create a new folder you have to do it a slightly different way.
Instead of file/new/folder
Use file/new/compressed(zip folder)
Move any files into this folder and they will be zipped.

but it doesn't give me the option...that's the problem

If it isn't at the bottom of the new file options menu " Compressed (zipped) Folder " then something has definately gone pear shaped.

no..it's not there...i guessed something was wrong!

Right click on the folder you create - go to Properties - Advanced - choose Compress folder.

When you're using NTFS, it works this way, rather than the "standard" way

You have presumably checked in Add/Remove Windows components that you've installed compressed folders?

  leo49 00:47 29 Apr 03

Sorry, thinking of ME - can't find it in XP component list. Is this progress?

  DieSse 00:48 29 Apr 03

XP installs it anyway.

DieSse - i have no "advanced" in folders properties..i have General Sharing and Customise
anyway i'm not working in NTFS i think it's fat 32

leo49 i have looked in the add/remove window and don't see compressed folder there for me to install

i hope these replies make sense to you
