can't find my usb hard drive

  Keithrow 18:45 21 Dec 06

My USB hard drive shows as being present in device manager, both in the disk drive section and the usb area. In both cases there are no problems flagged.

In 'my computer, the drive is not available, not shown at all.

If I try a different USB socket it makes no difference. If I disconnect other devices it makes no difference.

I tried uninstalling the USB deviice and it, the hard drive, was found on restart but not shown as being present in 'my computer'.

How do I access the missing drive?

Right click my computer

choose manage

disk management

from there you can format it which I presume hasn't been done.

the drive is not a 'new' drive. it is formatted and has previously been working as expected. I use the drive as a backup facility and can no longer access the contents.

Does it show up in disk management?

  Keithrow 19:24 21 Dec 06

it is present in device manager as previously stated.

Strange one; do you have access to another PC to which you can connect it?

Sounds like the disk has failed...

  Keithrow 19:30 21 Dec 06

yes I do and should have thought of that myself. I'll let you know what happens.

the USB drive was identified but there was an error installing it and the message was something like ....the device might not work correctly.

it is not visable in device manager either in the disk drive or USB section.

I guess this is not good news!!

Sounds like something has gone wrong :-(

  Keithrow 20:10 21 Dec 06

me thinks you maybe right.

but.... is it terminal? in your opinion of course.

  Diodorus Siculus 20:13 21 Dec 06

All this is only my opion and I live in hope that someone will butt in saying that they know what's wrong and then solve it :-)

In the meantime, I think it is terminal - don't know how it might be solved...
