Can't delete IE6 from XP

Since IE6 will for some reason no longer allow me to use a Download Manager such as DAP or FreshDownload (though I have no firewall set and security options are default-"allow third party browser" is also set)I would like to try a clean install but whatever I do I can't get rid of the current program. It doesn't show in Add/Remove and after momentarily deleting the Internet Explorer folder in Windows Explorer it just re-appears like magic!! I also find I can't get Opera to connect with my ISP Server and I somehow think all these issues may be related.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it and start afresh?

I have XP, IE6 and can use Opera (and Mozilla) together without any problems.

Thanks VoG for the response. I don't have the option of working from an alternative OS so I'm going to give the MS KB advice a try.
