Can't connect to internet - Vista

In the bottom right corner in Vista, the LAN icon is showing up as disconnected but everything is plugged in. This started happening randomly and to counter it I've been using System Restore which has been working for me fine, but i have to do this every time i want to go on the internet when i am in Vista!

i have typed ipconfig, it comes up as 'media: disconected'

My motherboard has Express Gate and that loads the internet fine and i can browse the internet no problems atall. This leads me to believe the problem is a software problem in Vista and not a hardware problem.

Any ideas? I don't know what to try next..

Right Click on the Icon and select Show Main Dialogue. Make sure that "Enable 2.4 GZ is selected and ticked

You can also look through the Help Topics when you right click the icon.

I have tried different lan cables and a new NIC but nothing plus scanned with Mcafee and Ad-aware. I've been battling this for days, any help is very much appreciated, thanks!
