connection to aol has been fine until lasty night tried to connect, modem dials up but when I get to step 4 when communicating with network, the connection fails. A message screen appears and informs me the firewall is preventing net access. I don't have a firewall running. The version of aol software is 9 on win98. Have spoken to aol helpline staff and they cannot even help. what they did say though was the modem should be on com port 3 or 4 at the moment it is not. will this be the problem of should I ditch the modem

Delete location and modem settings then restart the AOL software to auto detect, follow these steps.

Go to the AOL Sign-On Screen (make a note of these steps before you sign off).
AOL 9.0.

Click Sign On Options.

Select each location individually and click Delete and OK.

Click Close.

Rrestart AOL, and follow through the auto-detect process.

It sounds like a connection problem, so let's start with the basics.

Have you carried out the hyperterminal test?
I'm going to assume you don't have Hyperterminal installed on your system, so:–

1. Go to Control Panel.

2. Double click on the Add/Remove Program control panel.

3. Click on the Windows Setup tab.

4. Double click on Communications.

5. In the window that comes, there should be a
line which says HyperTerminal. Put a check in the box in front of it, if there isn't already one.

6. Click on OK

7. Click on OK again.

8. If it prompts for the Windows OS CD, then you need to have it in order to grab the program from there.

Then ------
To carry out Hyperterminal Test goto Start> Run> type -- hypertrm

At connection description……..type -- test
enter Telephone number 0808 990 9000 and from there you will see results.
