Can't access files on old HD

My old computer died - motherboard and power supply failure - and I had previously decided that I wouldn't be spending any more on it, so I bought a new one.

Removed 40GB HD from old PC and jumpered it to act as slave, in order to retrieve files from it. Didn't want to put it in new PC - opening case, invalidating warranty etc. - so put it in another old PC I have.

BIOS restrictions meant it couldn't be found, so used Seagate Disk Wizard to copy the whole thing on to an 80GB external drive.

Plugged the external drive into new PC - all files present, and many of them copied over and working fine. But a large proportion (the most important ones, needless to say!) won't copy -message says "Cannot copy... Access is denied". And if I try opening one of the offending files, Word (for example) tells me that the document name or path is not valid.

Any suggestions...?
