Hi stourry
Have you tried right cliking on your DVD writer selecting Properties/Recording and making sure you have the Enable recording on this drive box ticked? You can certainly make CDs MP3 or other things you want to put onto a cd OK,like photos.

If you are using nero make sure its set to cd and not dvd otherwise it wont recognize the disc

also go to control panel - system devices hardware and device manager to make sure that the computer recognises it as an IDE drive and it has not been changed to a SCSI device. If it has uninstall it and reboot computer and that might work.
