Canon printer IP4300 has stopped working

Can someone suggest what might be wrong with my Canon ip4300 printer? The ink tanks are OK. After pressing ctl + p it chunters away and then stops at the window 'collecting printer status'. I have gone through a diagnostic program which came up and nothing was found. I have a feeling that it is something fairly obvious, but can't see what! It has been working perfectly normaly until yesterday. No, I have not changed the ink tanks and I have pushed all the plugs in firmly.

Uninstall and reinstall the printer software (appears to be a common problem with a lot of different cannon models)
