Canon Pixma iP 3600

I am in the middle of a massive Ancestor Photo Project - up to 500 pictures and still counting.
My two year old Epson R220 suffered from one blocked jet and nothing I could do cleared it.
As time was pressing I bought a well regarded Canon Printer and all seemed well. Most of the pictures were B&W Scans from snaps some well over a century old.
Then I got to more recent colour photographs, I compared photos previously printed on the Epson, same paper etc. The Canon versions lack guts by comparison and the difference is marked.

Any ideas to improve the standard would be ap-preciated. I have tried all the obvious ones.
