Canon mg 5250 black and white printing

I have a new mg5250 printer. I printed a black and white document from my computer - a LibreOffice file. I couldn't find out from the canon printer menu whether I could specify just using the black ink. There was a tab on the printer menu for LibreOffice and in that there was a box for black only printing but I don't know whether the printer read it. The LCD screen on the machine had the icons for all the inks as it was printing and it was not possible to just press the black only button as neither that nor the colour button were lit up. 1. Is there somewhere on the computer printer screen that gives you the choice? 2. Can you use the buttons etc on the machine to specify how you want the document printed without using the computer screen?
