Canon iP4300 printer

I recently started using a Canon iP4300 printer which has 2 black ink cartridges - a large one and a small one.

It's now telling me that the large cartridge is running low, but the small cartridge is unused.

Does anyone know if the printer will automatically switch to the small cartridge when the large one is empty or not?

You should assume it won't.

The big one is pigmented ink, used for black and white documents. The smaller one is dye ink to be compatible with the dye colour inks.

running any inkjet with no ink in one takn might cause it to stop working and might overheat the print head.

Someone might come back with their first hand experience; this sounds over virtuous, but I do keep two speare of each in stock!

I agree, two different types of ink. The Canon will not switch to the other one so get a replacement ready!

Thanks for your advice.
