CANON Camcorder MVx-2i

I connected my CANON MVx-2i camcorder to my new ACER PC O/S Windows 7 64-bit via the Firewire connections and immediately the "DV In" sign appeared in the camcorder screen and the camcorder's play back became mechanically jittery and the image is distorted with horizontal lines whether it is or not connected to the PC. It continues to record smoothly as it always had done but playback is not working anymore and the "DV In" sign cannot be removed.

I wondered whether the PC's Firewire connection has corrupted the firmware and asked CANON whether I could download the necessary firmware but was told that this is not possible and the camcorder has to be sent back for repairs.

It is also possible that this fault was a coincidence but I cannot verify any of this.
Any ideas as to what the problem could be and what needs to be done will be of help. Thanks.
