cannot write to a cd

i have a time computer on win XP my cd R-W can play discs but when i try to copy some music it wont do it, see message below

the green activity light flashes in cd player for a while but it dosnt seem to recognise the Rec disc.....

i have tried new expensive ones as well as the cheap ones which used to work, i dont copy a lot and have alos tried music match, real player as well as WMP now on series 9

any ideas, is there maybe a programme i can run to check or something else, device manager says its working okay and the record is enabled in props....

Clean the disc and ensure that it is not damaged.
Select a slower recording (write) speed.
Try a different brand of CD-R or CD-RW disc.
Quit other programs.
To select a slower recording speed
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Devices tab.
In Devices, double-click the name of the CD-R or CD-RW drive, and then click the Recording tab.
In the write-speed list, select a slower speed.

Do you have nero, roxio or similar installed.

ive not got "nero, roxio or similar installed" sirculus, do i need this kind of programme
i have WMP 9 and ive tried music match and real player
they all offer a burning programme or is xp conficting with them

i dont burn many cds and it worked three months ago when a i burnt a couple of them, now it wont do it....

ive downloaded it but it still isnt working

my cd r-w is only flashing its green indidcator light and the deepburner says the device isnt ready

i dont think its recognising the r-w disks although i can play audio discs okay

any programme checkers for faults???
