Cannot uninstall PS/2 mouse

Windows XP has installed my spare mouse as a PS/2 device connected to my PS/2 port. But I do not have a PS/2 port and I was trying to get it to work from my USB port using a PS/2 to USB converter. It will not now let me uninstall the PS/2 mouse even though it goes through the motions and I re-boot, it still comes back so I cannot re-install it properly. Any ideas how I can make it go away? I've tried all the obvious stuff.

Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Mice and other pointing devices.

When that is open, Right Click and select disable. Then Reboot.

It is just possible that XP will reinstall it as a default, but that's what I would do.
