Just put the win XP cd in the drive and restart. It will ask you to press any key to boot from CD, so press a key. From there you want to use the repair option and follow any on screen prompts. When the repair is done, the system will restart. Do not press any key this time so as nt to boot from CD

Boot from the CD

Let the Setup go through the first part of the Installation procedure.

When you come to the screen in which it says "Welcome to Setup." press Enter to Setup Windows XP.

Press F8 to agree to the End User License.

Let the Setup search your system for previous versions of Windows.

When the Setup is finished searching your system, select your Windows XP Installation and press the R key on your keyboard to start the Repair Procedure.

Setup will delete all major system files and then replace them with new copies.

You will have to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update again because it replaces the files.

CD C:\Windows\System32\Config

REN system system.old

COPY C:\Windows\Repair\system

surely this last copy command must have a destination?

  temp003 09:51 27 Jan 04

Well spotted, you're right.

The destination should be C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system

Have performed the sugested operation but now the system appears to boot normally with the Logo but then very quickly flashes a blue screen and reboots and repeats the cycle.

Have tried fixboot also in repair options.
