Cannot play DVD or music sounds

I have a real funny one.

For some reason I cannot play my music files or hear the sound on my DVD's.

However, my Hauppauge TV does play with the sounds.

If it were just a connection fault to the speakers I would not hear that either.

If I copy the music files onto a CD using Nero, my separate DVD player will play it with sounds.

I have checked everything and my volume control is OK not ticked as mute and maximum volumes.

I have Vista on one drive. I connected that and that also plays.

I had backed up to an external drive yesterday when all was well and I have copied that back!

Still no use.

Any ideas please?

Have you opened volume control by right clicking on the speaker icon and made sure what inputs you have muted, cd has its own as well as line etc.,

Yes I have checked everything, just one of the oddities.

The only thing I have done is download the latest XP update!

I think I will format and re-install again.

Good job I have back-ups of everything.

Incidentally I have 55 of the 2006 football matches on and there the pictures play but no sound!

Still, my old Hauppauge WinTV works!

And.. to anyone who has it, I downloaded the latest upgrades to my Vista drive on the prompt and discovered that I can now record also. I couldn't before.

I then did the same to my XP and it works there also!

Very odd!
