Cannot open volume for direct access

When I try to run the Error Checking (Scan Disk)on my XP machine, the blue screen appears when it first boots up but I get the error message above.

Can anyone advise me why please?

The only thing of any note that I can recall doing is disabling system restore so that I could free up some space (it freed up about 10% of my 10 GB Hard Drive).

Came back after five mins or so and it was going thro' the check so whatever it was seems to have cleared.

again for some strange reason.

Worked once then gave up the ghost.

you say you disabled system restore to free up space on your hard drive so how much space have you got at the moment?

try running checkdisc in safe mode

I've only got a small one!

6.5 GB of 10 GB free
