cannot open .hlp files

From within a prog there is no response when clicking on help topics.
When I click on the corresponding .hlp files in Explorer the file association dialogue box comes up.

Windows help works OK ( .hcm files I think ). As do HTML help files.

Any ideas, please ?

Start, Run, type

SFC

and click OK. Insert your Windows CD if prompted.

Have already done that but there are so many files that have changed ( prob with Win updates) that I have no idea which one it might be. SFC shows no files deleted.
Is there any way of knowing which .dll is the relevant one ?

Suggest try this:

a) Right-click over any .hlp file and select Properties.
b) Click on the Change box (to the right of 'Opens with'.
c) Select your choice of prog in which to open the Help file(s); e.g. WordPad.
d) Tick the 'Always use the selected program to use this kind of file' box. Click on OK, Apply and OK.

From now on, /all/ files with the extension .hlp will open (globally) in your choice of prog. HTH.

Thanks holme

Have already done that.
Then tried to open them within a prog. No response.
Notepad just opens the file ready for the code to be edited, of course.

If i knew what the runtime executive actually was I could choose it instead of notepad. Think it may be the O/S itself, though.

In any Program just press F1

That only works if the program does not use .hlp files. Works in FireFox. But f/f does not have any .hlp files.

Still cant solve the problem.
I wonder if a .hlp file is in fact a system file and somehow it has become un registered.
There is a way of registering a file using the Run box. Does anyone remember how to do this, please? 98SE
