I got a file which I want to delete but cannot. My son went on Winmx and some file containing adult material appeared on the system."C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\xxxxxxx\My Music\con.my pussy look at me !!![dreamgirl HOT] lolita bitch xxx free porn qwerty(1).JPG"
It is on my desktop and if I click onto the start it appears in the rundown 4 times. I tried to delete but get the message:- cannot delete file: The file name is too long or invalid. Specify a different file name. OK
Can you help as my wife really went to town on him and on me a little but he's 18, what do you expect. He says he didn't know how it got there???
Thanx

Try running scandisk which might prompt a change in the name which might then let you delete the file.

Try booting into Safe Mode and delete it from there.

Have you tried dragging the file to the recycle bin?

Chris

If that fails right click on desktop and click new folder. Drag the file and drop it into the new folder then drag the file and drop it in the recycle bin.

I created a new folder but it wouldn't drop into it, just came back with the same reply:-cannot move file: The file name is too long or invalid. Specify a different file name.
It won't go in the recycle bin.
How do I delete it from dos???
I am gonna do a scandisk now and then if no good I will bott up in safe mode.
Thanx people

Deleting from DOS

Right-click the file and click Properties on the menu that appears. On the General
tab, what is the "MS-DOS name" that appears?

  Switcher 19:55 22 Jan 03

Shell out to DOS their are various ways of doing this, Click on DOSprmpt icon, or restart in DOS mode or START-RUN-Command.

Or boot to startup disk

THEN:- Typing CD to change directory

1. CD c:\windows to take you to the windows directory

2. CD Applications

3. CD Data

and so on until you reach the directory where the file resides THEN

DEL CONMYP~4.lnk

This should delete the file
