Cannot connect to secure server

Happens even on secure pages I've visited before, like login to BT directory enquiries; buying links on Amazon and so on.

I click on the link and get: 'Security Alert - You are about to be directed to a secure connection' box.

When I click 'OK' I get 'This page cannot be displayed'. This happens both on Freeola Broadband and Globalnet dial-up.

Been happening for a week or ten days. Windows XP on auto-update; IE6, SP1, Q828750.

Today got "You seem to be infected with nachi virus" screen from click here. Not true - have run Sophos fix and complete deep scan with Systemsuite5.0.0.6 latest updates.

If you disable your firewall do you still have problems?, Sounds like a firewall filtering traffic on port 443. Or if you use a proxy server click tools / internet options / LAN settings /advanced and remove the ip address from secure.

Thanks, Oglemire. Disabled firewall: no improvement. The only IP address shown is '' for proxy server; the IP address for 'Secure' is <local>.

I saw something in ComputerActive mag about how to uninstall one of the Microsft Q9999999 type updates because it messed something up, and wonder if that's anything to do with it. (Needless to say I didn't keep the article.)

Any other suggestions gratefully received, and thanks for your promptness on this one.

Try Proxomitron.

I had a similar problem despite the fact OE's security/privacy etc configuration was spot on, even with this website; after several days of frustration trying to sort it out my son, an IT support specialist, put me on to Proxomitron and my despair was over.

But be very, very sure to configure it exactly as specified if you do install it....

You may need to temporarily use the Bypass function in the Proxomitron panel if you experience difficulties filling in some website field forms.

It also stops pop ups etc. Can be found on September 2003 PCA cover disk, via google or in downloads at top of page.

Using System Restore, I traced the 'unable to access secure pages' back to either side of downloading and upgrading from V-Com SystemSuite 4 to SystemSuite 5. Uninstalling all traces of both and reinstalling SS 5.0 didn't fix it.

Spotted 'GhostSurf' as one of the bundled progs with the download, and idly clicked on 'Repair Internet Connection'. It worked, and I now can access secure webpages and https pages.

Thanks to Nigel at PCAdvisor Expert Advice Internet Helpline for the idea of using system restore to date the problem.
