Found scan for hardware changes. It just shows device manager again

Expand any one of the items in device manager highlight one of the expanded items then click Action - scan for changes - look under network adaptores to see if the ethernet adaptor has appeared with or without an error

Laptop or desktop?

LAN socket on motherboard on or separate card? if desktop you may need to fit a new card

PCMCIA card for laptops or can even do via USB link text

Check with SIW or Belarc to see if it shows up. If it doesn't it might be faulty. You can buy a pci ethernet card for a few pounds.
