Cannot connect to Internet

...through third party software, although Microsoft programmes are fine. iTunes, Symantec Systemworks, Musicmatch etc all ask me to check to see if I am connected and try again. The thing is I am already connected. I am using an Alcatel SpeedTouch USB. Maybe it is something to do with my settings? What should I check?

Do you have a firewall installed? If so, disable it for a moment and then try these programs.

I do not have one installed, unfortunately my ZoneAlarm Pro also refuses to believe that I am connected to the Internet. I am however using AVG which can update itself.

Are you using XP?Is the built-in firewall turned on?
