cannot boot up PC

Can you help, my dad's can't get his PC to boot up, he gets as far as the Windows XP Logon screen, then PC freezes, any idea how to fix it.

Restart and keep tapping F8 to bring up the Boot Menu. Select Command Prompt. At the > prompt type


and press the Enter key to launch System Restore.

'Please select boot device' is the message appearing when he brought up the boot menu, he cannot see where to select the command prompt,can you explain where he will get this.

You should see a menu with Safe Mode at the top. The one to select is Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Thanks for your help Woodchip and VoG, He has found Safe Mode with Command Prompt, when he presses enter it says please select the operating system to start, then he presses on Windows XP and it goes to a moicrosoft windows xp page and only gets to the logon screen then seems to crash.

There is an option there for cmd prompt only use this option and then use the advice Vog posted
