cannot access files on portable hardrive

Hi there. My neighbour's laptop died and the repair company saved all his files onto a portable drive. He's got a new laptop with windows 7 (that I have never used) and when we try to access what is on the drive we can see everything but when we try to open anything we get "Word (or whatever) cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges"He is administrator on his own laptop - I see the documents folder in the hardrive has a lock on it? If I copy the folder into his new laptop then we can access everythiing but we don't want to move everything back -he wants to keep his old stuff there and access it from there (the F drive) I am assuming this is a permissions issue somewhere - suggestions appreciated -thanks

Your neighbour will probably need to "take ownership" of the files in the external drive before being able to access them.

Have a look at this page click here which lets you add the "Take Ownership" option to the right click menu.
