Cannot access email

Can anyone help please,
I usually access my email through my virgin broadband connection on my PC. I have, previously, accessed this email account successfully via my laptop by simply connecting the Alcatel broadband modem to a USB port on the laptop. This time however when I try to get to my email I get and error message "The host 'POP3' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account:'POP3',Server: 'POP3', Port: 110,Secure(SSL): No,Socket Error. 11001, Error Number OX800CCCOD.

System is Windows 98SE on both machines.

Any help will be gratefully received.
