Cannibalise PCs ?

This may be a naive question, I sure I will be told if it is.

Is it possible to cannibalise the Hard drive from one PC and piggyback it into another PC ?
I know you can have external HDs, is this the same principle ?

Yes you can. If it's an IDE drive, install it as a slave in the new PC.

Or you could install it in an 'enclosure' click here and attach it to the new PC via USB.

One that's a little less expensive. click here

I've done it with several PCs. Both fitting them internally and using an enclosure, you get internal enclosures as well which fit into one of the 5.25" drive bays that you use for your CDROMs and if one of them is spare you can plug into that using something like this click here

Can it not be done by useing the spare bays available, or does it need extra hardware?
I assumed it would be a simple slot in and attach job ?
The cables have the connections already dont they ?

This is new ground for me, I have two old PCs I can play around with, and some spare time.

No extra hardware needed as long as you have a spare way on an IDE cable and the screws. Set the link at the back to the "Slave" position and just fit it and format it.

Many thanks.
I may be back later crying for help.
But it seems relatively simple.....famous last words ?
Thanks again.

DO NOT atttempt to use a hard drive with windows on as MASTER in anothe PC the drivers will be wrong in windows and it will probably not boot.

Fruit Bat/\0/\
Thats exactly what I did.

The PC with a dodgy HDD was the latest of the three I had to play with.
It had Win XP and empty slots, and spare power leads.
So I moved the two HDDs from redundant win98 PCs that the interior bays couldn't accomodate the extra drives, into the third PC.
Booting is the problem.....as you mentioned.

Back to scratching my head....and trying to sort it out.

I have no fears anymore about digging into the guts of the PC.
I have succesfully taken the parts of three Pcs and made one with two Hard drives.....and it is working OK.

Thanks for the help and advice, what would us newbies do without this forum ?

I am not that new, but advice never more than moments away on here.

Thanks again
