A friend has installed all of the XP updates from a CD ROM she borrowed from someone and now an icon in the taskbar keeps telling her to download the latest xp updates and when scolling through the list of updates, she realsies she already has them all, so what can she do to stop these messages appearing everyday in the taskbar.

Go to Control Panel, there should be an icon for Automatic Updates. Untick the item for "Keep my computer up to date ..." and click OK.

That would stop it, but in XP you can take an additional step. Click Start, Run, type services.msc and press Enter (or go to Administrative Tools and select Services).

You will see a list of services and their settings (Automatic means running at startup, Manual means will not start until needed, and Disabled means service is never available).

Find the item Automatic Updates, double click it, and change the "startup type" to Manual. click OK.

Don't change the settings for other services unless she knows what she's doing. Do not disable anything unless one is absolutely sure it is not needed.
