can you boot from usb hard drive

hi guys i am just wondering 2 things can you copy the entire contents from my old drive to a usb or new internal hard drive? Also is itpossible to boot from a usb hard drive.the thing being that my internal one is old and if it ever stops beating how do i access anything on the external?

2. Too see if your machine will boot from a USB device you will need to check in the BIOS. Look for the Boot from devices and the menu to check the different options.

thanx for the help so far,if my pc can boot off usb device would it need a new operating system or use the copied one?

I don't think you can load a OS onto a USB HD and boot from it,if i am wrong then someone will correct me.

You can boot from a USB floppy therefore you should be able to boot from a USB hard drive with an op system on.
