Can a USB only PC recognise a KVM PS2 mouse

New to the PC market, I am running a PC + RISCOS machine through a KVM switch. Monitor is fine, but the PC does not have PS2 mouse and keyboard ports (came with a USB remote k/b mouse). Windows XP just says the usb device is not recognised when I plug the KVM keyboard lead into a USB port using a PS2/USB adaptor. The KVM swith is still able to draw power from this port via adaptor, but can't be used to run keyboard & mouse. Any thoughts?

Do the Keyboard/Mouse require drivers installed??
Borrow a friends usb mouse & keyboard and confirm they work with XP. If they do and you require drivers for your own but cannot get them, an inexpensive purchase of the two items seems to be the way.
